Federal Brace's Spotlight Blog : Fireplace & Granite

One year ago Federal Brace had the honor of meeting Bob & Paulette from Fireplace & Granite. Even though both companies are from the Charlotte, North Carolina area they met each other in Atlanta, Georgia at the IWF Woodworking Show. Ever since Fireplace & Granite placed its first order with Federal Brace they have noted how pleasurable it is to work with a company that recognizes the importance of quality and serving the customer’s needs as they do.

Bob has over thirty years of experience working in the fireplace business. When Bob & Paulette relocated from Buffalo, New York a few years back, their drive and focus steered towards new construction. But times and the economy have changed. “For the most part, we have gotten rid of our builders. It’s all about remodeling,” Bob says.

Even with the adapting change in the economy, business has been up 30% the last four years and 98% of their business comes from referrals. Their business has been able focus on rebuilders and remodelers with in the Charlotte, Charleston and Columbia regions. Outdoor slabs and show rooms are available in North & South Charlotte.

Federal Brace is proud to do business with a company such as Fireplace & Granite.

Stainless Steel Shelves: Perfect for a contemporary office setting

We are always looking for ways to improve our offices here in Belmont. Our General Manager, Cathy Morgan came up with the idea of adding something to fill out our plain cement wall in the conference area. To add to the décor we knew we needed something classy, respectable and elegant, but practical. We just recently put Federal Brace's Stainless Steel Shelves on the market, and this setting seemed like the perfect fit for our shelves.

Federal Brace's Stainless Steel shelves are superior to standard wooden shelves in many ways. Not only is it stronger than a standard shelf but it also resistant against deterioration and surface corrosion that is common with standard shelves. Our stainless shelves work well with cabinets, in the pantry, garage or even the office. The stainless self has a short profile that allows for an understated enhancement to other metal features in the room. We have over hanging metal lights and track lighting - the shelves just accentuate the lighting in the room.

These shelves will work great in both residential and commercial installations. So whether you're going for a contemporary look or need stainless shelves for the additional strength these shelves work well anywhere you want to put them. Kitchen Design tips -

Hire An Architect/Kitchen Designer - This is an extremely important step and a one of the most important kitchen design tips...you need to have kitchen floor plans drawn up in order to move ahead. Not only will they help you to decide what products, materials, and sizes to use, but they will also act as a precise blueprint for your contractor, electrician, plumber, tile installer, and countertop fabricator to follow once your renovation is underway.

Kitchen Design tips -

What should I budget for?
Well, it all depends on how large or small you plan your kitchen renovation to be. Let's assume you are planning a full kitchen renovation. Use these kitchen remodel cost percentages as a guideline:

Appliances 10%
Cabinetry 30%
Countertops 10%
Electrical and Plumbing 10%
Flooring 10%
Backsplash and Painting 10%
General Contractor - Labor 20%

Always add 30% to the bottom line to compensate for any product and labor increases.

I know this seems like a lot but, you'll be happy you did!

Do I need to reseal my granite? How often?

Your countertops were sealed prior to installation, but depending on the type of granite you chose, an occasional application may be needed. Darker colored granite is harder than lighter colors, and as a result, less permeable. Therefore, dark countertops may never need resealing. Light colored countertops may require an annual application depending on how quickly absorbed moisture evaporates out.

Where does Granite come from?

Granite is mined at thousands of quarry sites throughout the world including North America, Brazil, Turkey, India and many others including Arizona. A granite quarry may be an open area, a hillside, or an underground site. A modern quarry will likely use diamond-edge saws or water-jet technology (green friendly) to extract granite in symmetrical blocks that are processed into individual slabs for commercial and residential fabrication and installation.

For over 6,000 years the world's royalty and rulers have used granite lavishly as a beautiful, permanent, prestigious building material. Just recently over the last 25 years modern technology and market values have made granite an affordable and highly valuable investment. Granite offers unprecedented beauty, rarity, prestige and application. Commercial granite has seen a steady evolution in the past 200-year period. Today, the architectural, structural, decorative and artistic values of granite impart corporate stability, integrity, value and quality. Granite is now the #1 building material of choice in America.

Remodeling

Remodeling involves major changes that may take your kitchen in a whole new direction. A remodeled kitchen is what you're up to if you need to change the whole "footprint" of your kitchen to add space or reshape the room for better views or better access. While your existing home's size and site will affect how radically you can change your kitchen, you can make surprisingly big changes.

Remodeling doesn't depend on what your old kitchen looked like, only on what your needs and wishes are and what your budget dictates. New built-in appliances and cabinetry, new windows and skylights, a new eat-in area or home office niche, a family room/ kitchen combination, and more -- anything's possible with remodeling.

Where to put the Kitchen Island?

The National Kitchen and Bath Association(NKBA), recommends that you have a 36″ clearance in traffic areas and 42″ clearance in the work area of your kitchen.

Thursday, June 9, 2011

Island Sizing.

There are no set guidelines for sizing an island, but there are a few rules for the spaces around it. A designer figures out the work and walk-aisle clearances, and those dimensions dictate plans for the structure.

Its shape is often determined by the surrounding area. The basic four-sided island is the workhorse configuration most popular in closed floor plans. For open rooms, angular islands—think L, Y, U or V shapes—act as a wall delineating the kitchen without totally blocking it off. While these multifaceted designs cost more to build, they typically offer more places for shelves, drawers, wine racks, towel bars, pullout bins and other amenities, as well as more space for appliances.

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

No man is an island, but most people want one in their kitchen.

The middle of the kitchen is the traditional spot for an island. A central island anchors the room and organizes the work flow while providing accessible counter space from all directions.

Use custom kitchen islands to create an attractive area that will perform a variety of useful functions. Designed correctly, kitchen islands will make your work area more functional and efficient and will be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come.

You must be creative and plan. We will be revisiting Kitchen Islands in the upcoming blogs and going into more detail.

Picking Your Granite Color

You want to find a granite warehouse with a large selection. Make sure they have full slabs of granite for you to see. When you visit, bring your cabinet sample or a door from your existing cabinets. Hold the sample up to the granite, you should be able to tell right away if it is a good match or not. Don’t settle for something that you may not like. This is something that will be a defining element of your kitchen and you need to find a color that appeals to you.

Ask the granite warehouse to pull 5 or 6 slabs for you to view. Make sure the slabs are the same color and point out any dark/light spots or any pattern that you do not like and that you would like to exclude when they cut your kitchen. You may also request a revisit once they measure your kitchen so you can see the cuts they are making and how that will affect your color pattern.

Granite Countertop Maintenance*

A solid quality countertop can define a kitchen. The inclusion of a granite counter top will add class to the most modest of kitchens. They are available in a number of colors and are extremely durable (although periodic sealing is usually a must). Although there is some maintenance involved, granite kitchen counter tops are elegant and timeless.

For Daily care --
stone countertops, daily maintenance consists of simply wiping with a damp cloth or sponge. It's recommended that the countertop be cleaned using a stone soap once per week.

If your countertop has a polished finish, you can keep the gleam by applying a stone polish. It's easy to use, you simply apply, allow to dry, and then buff to a shine once a month or so.

Citrus juices & vinegars contain acid that if left unattended, could etch your countertops. Oils can also leave a stain on your counters. Bottles of oil or items containing oil, grease, etc. should be placed on a protective surface while cooking.

Using Metal Support Brackets to Accent Hardware

There is no question that Federal Brace countertop support brackets are sturdy. In fact, due to the strength of the brackets, our supports at times tend to be pigeon-holed into only supporting countertops.
Federal Brace has designed a selection of heavy duty yet elegant support brackets that go beyond the simple shelf or standard industrial style support brackets. Many designers and contractors are now seeing Federal Brace Supports for what they are - enhancing hardware pieces that can be used in various home decor applications.

Whether used in the kitchen, bath, studio, office or living areas, Federal Brace Support brings a decor touch that shows the homeowner attention to detail and care for quality. At the recent KBIS 2011 Kitchen and Bath Show we had support brackets in several vendor booths, used in actual applications and we were very honored. A couple of those applications, including Masterbrand's Diamond Series kitchen display (pictured at the top), used the Federal Brace supports to hold self-standing shelves within the kitchen cabinet arrangements. The brackets added to the overall appearance of the full kitchen by giving that touch of metal, tying in appliances, fixtures and other hardware with the cabinets.

So when you are considering that decor enhancement that will make your kitchen, bath, residential or commercial application standout think Federal Brace Supports. Designers using our hardware for decor accents have indicated that Federal Brace brackets are perfect because they are not the wimpy looking thin shelf brackets common on the market. The thickness of material that we use on our bracket make a support that looks like it can hold more than your pantry shelves. At the same time the designers really like the sleek, design enhancing appeal of a Federal Brace Support style. It is not that industrial looking shelf bracket that is used commonly in commercial applications.
How to pick the Federal Brace bracket that is right for your application as a hardware decor accent piece. Follow these easy steps:

1. Determine the Gusset shape that best matches with the overall appeal of your living space. If you want an understated look, look at the supports with the lower profile gussets. If it is high-impact that you want, you will want to look to the brackets with the full gussets.
2. If the bracket will be used in a supporting role for shelves, mantle or other surfaces you will need to think about how deep that surface is and how it will be installed. We suggest using a bracket that is not too small under the surface so that you can't see it. When determining what bracket to use as support we use an industry standard to extend the support bracket to within 4" of the end of the surface.
3. Determine the finish you desire. In most instances our decor enhancing supports are purchased in the brushed stainless finish since it matches so well with stainless appliances and nickel fixtures. However, you may have a particular color you are going after in which case you will want to get raw steel and coat it with your custom color. Check out our helpful video on painting your brackets to get more information on this: PAINTING VIDEO - Please Scroll down to Tips & Tricks.
4. If you need a custom style bracket or to modify a current Federal Brace design to meet your needs contact our helpful customer service representative at customerservice@federalbrace.com to discuss your needs.

That's it. Now you are on your way to new methods of using Federal Brace Countertop Supports to enhance your kitchen and bath designs.

Our review of KBIS 2011 - Las Vegas, Nevada

Federal Brace brought its Eva Reinforced corbel to the best in show at KBIS early last week. The three day long event is the Super Bowl for the Kitchen and Bath industry. A huge event in itself is typically held in Las Vegas, Chicago and Orlando. The event took place at the Las Vegas Convention center in Nevada, Las Vegas.

Architects, dealers, designers, and industry professionals within the kitchen and bath field were presented with several new designs from Federal Brace. Scott Toal, CEO/President of Federal Brace said, “The best part of the show was meeting and hearing from current customers and getting their comments on our products.”

The team at Federal Brace saw representatives from Pan America, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and every province of Canada. Scott Toal continues, “ We saw visitors from 48 out of 50 states. What I liked about having it in Las Vegas is that we were able to meet some of our clients from California, Nevada, Colorado and Hawaii. I had a chance to meet Dave Dressler, a longtime client of our company.”

Federal Brace received quality feedback pertaining to current designs and made a large number of contacts, which they will be following up soon. There were a smaller number of vendors, the foot traffic was consistent and the company was satisfied with the turnout. General Manager, Cathy Morgan said, “We had a great time connecting and building relationships with our distributors as well as meeting some of our customers. It was good to see our product showcased in several cabinet dealer booths. Federal Brace is already making plans for the KBIS show in 2012. We hope to see you at our booth!” Looking forward to the next year, Cathy, at KBIS, Chicago.

Our KBIS from last year.

Last April, Federal Brace went to Chicago, Illinois for KBIS 2010. It was the first time for the company. They spent three to four days at the show in a 10X10 booth with up to 15 to 20 countertop bracket designs. The KBIS event ended up being very important for the growth of the company.

The three-man team was very impressed with different vendors, different booths, and even though it was reported that the participation was down from previous years, Federal Brace was very active at their booth and made great contacts. The booth was on the “outskirts” of the traffic areas for the show, but they had a good turnout at the Federal Brace Booth. By the second day, Federal Brace ran out of catalogs and the comments on the countertop supports were very positive.

Federal Brace President, Scott Toal says, “We found the participants were impressed with our designs. We had architects, contractors and designers visit us at the booth. They asked very good questions and pointed out things they like in our product. It was very helpful for a company just entering the market.”

One funny story about the company’s visit to Chicago was a learning experience on the show floor. While setting up the booth the Federal Brace staff learned that if you don’t have union workers setting up your booth you cannot use any power tools. All of Federal Brace products are mounted individually to a display wall. “My hands were so sore by the end of set up.” adds Scott Toal, “Just a funny thing that happened, but the entire venue was phenomenal and we were very happy with the response.”

Now, Federal Brace has close to thirty designs, they have ventured into reinforced corbels, Bracket Backer™ boards and shelf brackets. They invite you to check out their website before attending the show. “We hope that designers will be very impressed with our line,” says Federal Brace General Manager, Cathy Morgan.

This time Federal Brace will bring more catalogs. They had such a positive response and it was the first venture into tradeshows. Now they fully understand why people say KBIS is the pinnacle in the Kitchen and Bath trade and the company is honored to be apart of this event. Last year they made excellent contacts from Chicago and hope to do the same with this year in Las Vegas. It should be an amazing show and they hope to see you all there, BOOTH NUMBER C7283 / 2011 KBIS Las Vegas.

Federal Brace's Brickyard supports any countertop.

Ok. So we broke all the molds on our latest in elevated supports, The Brickyard Countertop Support. Although southern born and bred, The Brickyard does not take its name from drag, stock or even kart racing (but it would be cool if it did). The south is where bricks are made and we are proud of our brick making! The Brickyard is made of steel and symbolizes the strength of brick - made from cinder, fire and ash. This mighty look surrounds the oval at the Indianapolis 500 and now you have this steel powerhouse for your granite and concrete bar applications. Our bracket will hold up against weather and is a durable and strong carrier of stone or granite.

When you hold this bracket in your hand you know you’re holding something strong. You need something strong to hold up your granite. You want something with a strong foundation. Well, look no further than this beast for your next kitchen, bar or office remodeling job. It looks great indoors and excellent outdoors. When you are ready to fire up your grill, this is a wonderful outdoor support. A perfect addition to any Floating Countertop, granite application or stone bar – it is a master addition to the Federal Brace line.

A hulk of a design, with three holes that give it a modern spacious look, in keeping with our Euro-modern designed brackets. Clearly American-made - you will not find a more beefy support anywhere in the market. Trust your instincts and put this in any construction or work area you may find. You will not be disappointed in this beautifully crafted, confident support.

Federal Brace: More Ways Better Than the ‘other guys’ - Supporting Shelves, Too.

Federal Brace is expanding its product selection to include shelf support brackets. The company’s countertop supports are providing that solution the consumer wants for their solid surface counters and now the company is determined to support the rest of the home as well. With its new line of shelf support brackets Federal Brace is moving into the library, bedroom and pretty much anywhere where there is a standard shelving application.

By the end of the year, Federal Brace plans to add sixteen shelf bracket styles, some of them modeled after your favorite kitchen countertop supports, matching the countertop supports in your kitchen to the shelves in the rest of your house can be achieved.

How are they structured differently? First of all, you’ll notice a considerable weight difference between Federal Brace and Box-Store Brackets. The Federal Brace shelf support bracket is made out of a twelve-gauge material while the standard box store bracket is made out of a thinner material. The Federal Brace shelf bracket mount is a wider dimension. This provides greater strength and stability to your shelves. Federal Brace Shelf Brackets make the wood or plastic counterparts look like toothpicks – in my opinion.

Federal Brace shelf brackets give you a choice, and a benefit in a brushed stainless finish that matches nicely with standard stainless and brush nickel finishes. They provide the stainless steel option, knowing that customers are willing to pay for a certain type of look. You will notice that Federal Brace has less dings than store bought corbels, because of the care involved with the finishing the brackets, and the fact that they are not shipped in containers from overseas. Not to forget, the bracket is constructed with plug welding which gives a weld free finish on the face of the bracket.

Federal Brace knows that some homeowners want to have heavier shelving applications. You can support wood, glass, marble, granite and no weak substitute will do for any of these applications. Some may point out the price comparison, that’s fine, because as the old adage goes, “ you get what you pay for.” So, when your shelves matter, go with Federal Brace Shelf Supports. ~ www.federalbrace.com

Thankful for US Steel

US Steel has been instrumental to the world’s industrial economy since 1850. Before that decade, steel was too expensive to produce and was only used where nothing else would do. It is great for projects that require high strength and durability. It is less expensive than aluminum, titanium and other metals with a high strength to weight ratio. It is great for projects that require high electrical or conductivity or that require high resistance to corrosion.

By 1900’s the U.S. was the largest producer and also the lowest cost producer, output had tripled since 1890 and customers benefited the most. Productivity-enhancing technology encouraged faster and faster rates of investment in new plants. In the United States the central figure was Andrew Carnegie, who made Pittsburgh the center of the industry. He sold his operations to US Steel, Inc. in 1901. That company went on to become the dominant steel corporation for decades to come.
During the 70’ s US Steel could no longer compete with low-wage producers. Imports and mini-mills undercut the industry. After decades of losing out to foreign investments, US Steel, Inc reemerged in 2002 with plants in three American locations, over taking mass producers in Japan, China and India.
As a leader in the increasingly competitive global steel industry, the United States Steel Corporation is dedicated to delivering high-quality products to customers and building value for all of their stakeholders, funding American made steel and American made parts which benefit Americans.
At Federal Brace and Short Run Pro we wanted to take a minute and relive the benefits and history of American made US Steel and the comeback story that is currently ongoing. Steel is the backbone of both companies and this country. You can rest assured that we are using American made US Steel and will continue to make US Steel parts.

Federal Brace, A company on the move.

This week I’ve chosen to recount the incredible year Federal Brace has had bringing their customers Beautifully Crafted, Confident Supports. They have doubled their countertop bracket line by announcing the release of ten new styles. These fresh new countertop bracket designs augment the large selection of countertop supports already available under the Federal Brace brand.

The company’s new Enterprise Support, Foremont Support, and Perrine Decorative Support styles are part of the new countertop mounted support line. The use of these brackets within this application type is to support an elevated bar directly from the lower countertop level. The brackets are mounted directly to the sub-counter and elevated on a counter or a bar on support plates at the top of the bracket.

Federal Brace announced the Bracket Backer ™, a designing enhancement with backer board trim that protects soft wall material behind brackets in heavy weight applications. This product is designed to prevent sheetrock flexing or crushing of soft wallboard materials.

They provide free video guides and tips regarding countertop and countertop bracket installations.
